Terry and Me Welcome to Power By Plants! I’m glad you have checked in. The mission of the site is to help you learn about the benefits of a Plant-Based Lifestyle. It truly will enhance your health and overall well being.

I’m Drew Niemann. I have been married for 25 years to the most amazing person, Terry. We are the parents of two adult children, Brooke and Kyle.

I was brought up like many people on the typical 1960’s and 1970’s American diet. Turkeys for Thanksgiving, barbeques in the summer and Sunday dinners with roast beef and Lasagna as the offerings.

Since I was a small boy, I have been fascinated, curious and involved with food. At the ripe old age of four, I knew I wanted to be a chef and I did realize that dream. I met Terry at one of my first culinary jobs, where she also worked. I have been professionally involved in various parts of the foodservice industry for over 30 years.

Terry went on to become a school teacher helping children with special needs. Over the years she has also become quite an accomplished home chef in her own right!

My personal journey began initially after both my parents passed away within 6 months of each other due to different forms of cancer, I began questioning diet and exercise and their direct correlation to illness.

I spent the next decade studying and trying to make changes to my personal health. To be honest, I did not make a serious consistent effort. However, I did learn a few things along the way.

Unfortunately, during this same time period Terry began putting on weight and discovered that she was also asthmatic. I’m proud to say that Terry went on to lose over 90 pounds and became a Weight Watchers Leader as well as a certified personal trainer.

Once Terry decided that she needed to watch what she ate, that was when our world changed. We began eliminating the junk in the house and really started paying attention to what we were putting in our bodies.

I began transitioning to a Plant-Based Diet in 2011. It was a bit of an experiment to improve my cycling ability. However, I was still hooked on animal protein. Being around all sorts of delicious foods on a daily basis only hindered my progress.

During the summer of 2012, Terry and I decided to enhance our education and well being further by watching a few documentaries based around food. I was heavily influenced by “Forks Over Knives” as it related to my parents illnesses. Terry was affected by the film Earthlings. After viewing she became a vegan cold turkey! (Sorry for the pun)

On July 27th 2012, Terry, Brooke and I moved to a completely committed Plant-Based diet. Meat, dairy or any animal by-products were removed from our diets. Our son Kyle has cut back on his animal protein, but still partakes.

As time passed, Terry and I have learned that eating this way tends to become a lifestyle change. We notice every fast food commercial on television; we eat at different restaurants now and find ourselves naturally seeking out and trying to connect to “people like us”.

Since the time we went completely plant based, we have seen significant changes in our health.  You will come to learn about this throughout your visit here. In addition, our mental well being has been greatly enhanced.
